Trained Support for Addiction-Related Betrayal
The following organizations offer directories of therapists who have been trained in treating sexual addiction and betrayal trauma.
- International Institute for Trauma and Addiction Professionals
- The Association of Partners of Sex Addicts Trauma Specialists
- Society for the Advancement of Sexual Health
Trained Support for Infidelity-Related Betrayal
While there is no one directory that we can point you to for therapists trained in treating infidelity that is not addiction-related, we can give you some pointers about what to ask and to look for as you interview potential therapists to support you.
- Ask about the specific training the therapist has received in treating infidelity and betrayal trauma. Look for certifications and professional programs from leaders in the field rather than broad answers such as “lots of experience with couples dealing with these issues.”
- Ask for a roadmap. How does the therapist treat infidelity, what approach do they take, and how will therapy progress?
- Expect the therapist to play an active role. Healing from infidelity is not a passive process. You need a therapist who will help you set boundaries, clarify issues that are murky, assist you in probing into the deeper emotional layers and guide you through the process of repairing the broken relational bond. This takes a pro-active therapist, not just a good listener.
